I shared an allotment with my friend in New Cross, South London. It was a very urban site, next to a train track. We were focussed on growing vegetables.

We did a lot of digging. At times it would get overgrown.

There was an evolution. My friend is a community gardener and so while her focus was on vegetables, she brought in more flowers, and later fruit trees.

For the last year (2018-2019) I did it with my partner while my friend had her second baby. Each year felt like a new beginning.

Ultimately it became too much effort once we both had children. We learnt a lot though and decided that were we to do it again we’d do a forest garden…
